Last news about ManwomanSorry to say that my dad, ManWoman, is not faring well. He has a kind of cancer that causes his bone marrow to cease making blood. The technical name is Refractory Anemia with Excess Blasts. In short, without new blood, it is impossible to breath, fight infections, or clot and stop bleeding. He had been receiving t
ransfusions of blood and platelets, but there is no cure for this kind of cancer. Not chemo therapy. Not bone marrow transplant, because he is old and weak. In any case, ManWoman does not wish to endure weeks of traumatic medical treatment, when the potential time gained is so very small. ManWoman has made the decision to pass peacefully—and with Dignity—in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by family and friends. No further transfusions or treatments will be made—except medication for the rather intense pain. When the blood cells from his last transfusion are gone, well … The clock is ticking. There is no exact prediction how much time isleft. One day or a few days—probably. A week or two—maybe. Months—not very likely. I wish there was better news, but there isn’t. It will be a sad day when he passes, but he has left the world an enormous and inspired body of work. He will not be forgotten by those who love him. We will always carry a piece of him in our hearts. ~ Ivan Cat

At first glance you may assume this man is a member of some kind of White Power gang, he has hundreds of Swastikas tattooed all over his body but your assumption could not be further from the truth. This is Manwoman an american poet, artist and self proclaimed “God mad fool”. Manwoman’s goal is to reclaim the swastika in the name of spirituality, culture and well being. The swastika to most of us has sadly become a symbol of atrocity, pain and death but in reality it has a vast history that can be traced back over three thousand years. The name swastika is derived from the Sanskrit word Svastika meaning lucky, and was used on people and things to denote good luck. It has been used in countless cultures, from ancient Germanic people to the name of a 20th century Canadian hockey team. The symbol is most prevalent however in Asian religions. In Hinduism the swastika depending on what way it faces can represent either the evolution or the involution of the universe. In Buddhism it is known as “The Hearts Seal” and was allegedly stamped on the chest of the Gautama Buddha after his death. In Jainism it is the symbol of the seventh Jina (saint) and all temples and holy books must contain a swastika. It was used for thousands of years and many millions of people before it was adopted by the tyrannous Nazi party. It is still used today for uses completely opposite of what most assume it stands for. Think before you shout out “that nazi sign!”. Think before you shout out anything, the simplest things may have the most complicated history behind them. Never assume you know all there is about anything.

About

The swastika has been used in practically every culture for as long as documentation has been available with all positive meanings including: good luck, prosperity, fertility, inner strength, the Sun God, peace and love.
This blog is mainly to document the United States' use of the symbol as a sign of good including usage on products, good luck charms, archetecture and the Native Americans' usage.
